How to Choose Your Wedding Cake in Northern Indiana
Choosing your wedding cake should be one of the sweetest parts of planning your wedding, but with so many options for flavors, sizes, designs, and serving styles, it can also feel a little overwhelming.
At Indiana Manna Kitchen, we believe your wedding cake should feel like you. Whether that means a traditional tiered cake, a small heart-shaped cutting cake, or a dessert spread filled with several of your favorite sweets, there isn't one right way to do wedding cake.
If you're planning a wedding in Northern Indiana, here are a few things to consider as you choose yours.
Start With Your Guest Count
Your guest count is a great place to start, but it doesn't necessarily mean your display cake needs to serve every person at your wedding.
Some couples love the tradition and impact of a large tiered wedding cake. Others choose a smaller cake for cutting and supplement it with sheet cake, cupcakes, cake parfaits, or other desserts.
For couples who want cupcakes, we generally recommend one standard-sized cupcake per guest, plus an extra dozen for every 100 guests. If you're serving several different desserts, we can help you determine quantities based on the size of your guest list and the variety you're offering.
The goal is to have plenty for your guests without ordering far more dessert than you actually need.
Think About the Experience You Want
Wedding cake isn't just dessert. It's part of the reception experience.
Do you picture walking into your reception and seeing a beautiful tiered cake waiting for you? Do you love the idea of cutting a small vintage-inspired heart cake together? Would your guests have more fun choosing among cupcakes, cookie bars, cake parfaits, and other sweets?
Your answer can help determine what makes the most sense.
A traditional wedding cake creates a beautiful focal point and gives you the classic cake-cutting moment. A smaller cutting cake paired with additional desserts gives you that same tradition while offering guests more variety.
Neither option is better. It's about what fits your wedding.
Choose Flavors You Actually Love
Your wedding is not the day to choose a flavor simply because it seems like the "wedding cake" thing to do.
If you love chocolate, choose chocolate. If you want something bright and fruity for a summer wedding, consider fruit fillings or citrus flavors. For fall weddings, warm flavors like maple, cinnamon, caramel, and spice can be beautiful additions to the menu.
We love helping couples combine cakes, fillings, and buttercreams to create something that feels a little more special than an everyday cake while still being something they'll genuinely enjoy eating.
And you don't necessarily have to choose just one.
Different tiers can feature different flavor combinations, and couples serving cupcakes or a dessert table can offer several options for their guests.
Let Your Venue and Season Influence the Design
Northern Indiana weddings can look very different depending on the season and location.
A summer lake wedding in Culver or Syracuse may call for something completely different from an autumn celebration in Plymouth or a formal reception near South Bend.
Your venue, florals, colors, season, and overall wedding style can all provide inspiration for your cake.
Rather than trying to match every detail exactly, we like cakes that feel as though they naturally belong in the room. Fresh or sugar flowers, textured buttercream, vintage piping, simple tiers, and understated details can all make a cake beautiful without overwhelming the rest of your wedding design.
Don't Forget About Delivery and Setup
Wedding cakes require a little more planning than picking up a birthday cake on the way to the party.
Consider who will transport the cake, when your venue allows vendors to arrive, where the cake will be displayed, and whether your baker will be setting everything up.
Temperature matters, too, especially during Northern Indiana summers. Buttercream and heat are not exactly best friends.
At Indiana Manna Kitchen, delivery and setup can be coordinated as part of your wedding cake order so that your cake arrives safely and is ready before your guests enter the reception.
Book Earlier Than You Think
Wedding dates can fill quickly, especially during popular spring, summer, and fall weekends.
You don't need to know exactly what your cake will look like when you reserve your date.
In fact, we prefer that couples don't feel pressured to make every design decision immediately.
Once your date is reserved, we can finalize the design closer to your wedding when your flowers, colors, décor, and other details have come together.
Make the Tasting Part of the Fun
Your wedding cake tasting should feel like a date, not another appointment on an already overwhelming wedding checklist.
Indiana Manna Kitchen wedding tastings include three cake flavors and six fillings, giving you the opportunity to mix, match, and discover combinations you might not have considered before.
It's also a chance for us to learn about your wedding, your style, and what matters most to you.
There Is No One "Right" Wedding Cake
One of the best things about modern weddings is that couples have more freedom than ever to make traditions their own.
Choose the towering cake.
Choose the little heart cake.
Choose cupcakes.
Choose a table covered in desserts.
Choose the flavor everyone tells you isn't "traditional enough."
Your wedding dessert should be something you're excited to share with the people you love.
Indiana Manna Kitchen creates wedding cakes and desserts for couples throughout Plymouth, South Bend, Mishawaka, Warsaw, Culver, Syracuse, Winona Lake, Elkhart, Goshen, and surrounding Northern Indiana communities.
